Welcome to Houston's Historic First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Houston. FIrst Church was founded in 1851 in downtown Houston and has been in Midtown since 1927. It sits across the street from the bustling campus of Houston Community College and has a diverse membership of Houstonians of all ages, races and backgrounds. The present church building has been honored by architects as a perfect example of Lombard Romanesque style of architecture, though it is being restored at present due to our fire. We anticipate returning to our beautiful nave in mid to late 2012. And when we do, it will be better than ever.
On any warm spring afternoon you are liable to spot college students relaxing on the beautiful front lawn, the front steps of the sanctuary, or in the gazebo. On Wednesdays during the Spring and Fall semesters, Pr. McClanahan teaches an introductory class to Christianity, Jesus 101. A similar class is offered in the evening for Midtown residents.
On Sunday mornings, we invite you to visit our 11:00 a.m. service and our 10:00 a.m. Sunday School class. In Sunday School, you will hear Lutheran teaching on historical, biblical, social and moral issues of our day. In worship you will experience wonderful music in the Lutheran tradition, meet friendly parish members, listen to the inspiring and thoughtful sermons from our pastor, and receive Holy Communion every Sunday, which is open to all baptized Christians.
First Church is a recent addition to the North American Lutheran Church (NALC). You won’t find fire and brimstone at First Church; only the Lutheran pillars of Law and Gospel. You won’t find politicking or cheap appeals to emotion; only the objective Word of God that has been handed down to us for 2,000 years. You will find at First Church a simple message — that in Jesus Christ, the entire world, and you yourself have a friend, Lord, and Savior. We look forward to seeing you soon.
